Already have 40,000 songs synchronized through iTunes or Apple Music? When we install Rockbox, our goal is to preserve your existing music files and original Apple OS library. Rockbox can scan compatible music already stored on your iPod and build its own separate database. You do not normally need to erase or transfer your entire collection again.

Example: How Dual Boot Works With Your Music

Step 1 — Your iPod already has 40,000 songs: You send your iPod to Hightech Electronics. We install Rockbox with Dual Boot while taking precautions to preserve your music. Rockbox scans compatible files and builds its own music database.

Step 2 — Return to original Apple OS: Follow the included Dual Boot instructions to switch back. Your existing Apple library remains available if it was functioning correctly before installation.

Step 3 — Add another 10,000 songs through iTunes: Continue synchronizing with compatible software. When you return to Rockbox, update its database to discover the new compatible files.

Step 4 — Add songs directly through Rockbox: Files transferred through drag and drop are accessible through Rockbox's file browser and can be included in its database. However, music added this way will NOT automatically appear in the Apple OS music library. Apple OS and Rockbox use separate databases. To appear in Apple OS, songs must be added through compatible Apple synchronization software.

OPTION 1 — SEND YOUR EXISTING IPOD: Purchase the service and ship your working, compatible iPod to Hightech Electronics. Standard standalone installation is normally configured, tested and shipped back within three business days after receipt. Additional repairs, troubleshooting or storage issues may take longer with authorization.

OPTION 2 — ADD TO EXISTING REPAIR: Already sending an iPod for battery replacement, storage upgrade, USB-C or other repairs? Purchase this service and send your existing order number. The iPod ships with your main order; the standalone three-business-day turnaround does not apply.

OPTION 3 — ADD TO NEW IPOD PURCHASE: Purchasing a customized iPod? Add this service and message us with your order information. We install and configure Rockbox before the completed iPod ships.

IMPORTANT TECHNICAL INFORMATION

Rockbox does not directly use the original Apple database; it builds and maintains its own. Files added through drag and drop for Rockbox do not automatically appear in Apple OS. DRM-protected files may not play in Rockbox. Installation does not repair damaged storage, corrupt music files, hardware faults or an overloaded Apple OS database. Although installation can normally be performed without erasing music, data preservation is not guaranteed: back up your iPod before shipping. Rockbox does not increase RAM or storage capacity.

Hightech Electronics pays standard return shipping within the USA. eBay listing handling time is up to 40 business days; standalone Rockbox-only installations on working compatible devices are normally shipped within 3 business days after receipt.
